Barry Bozeman and Mary Freeman define mentoring “…[as] a process for the informal transmission of knowledge, social capital and the psychosocial support perceived by the recipient as relevant to work, career, or professional development….”1 Seven SigEp alumni assembled on the last Saturday of February to provide over 50 mock interviews to our MO Eta undergraduates. An annual event providing the undergraduates with feedback on their resumes; discussing how to dress for success; exposing them to those difficult interview questions; coaching them how to validate their experience with appropriate examples to sell themselves and their skills; and advising them how to close the deal and sell themselves to the interviewer.
Noah Fahnestock, VP of Brotherhood Development, stated, “Everyone is still talking about how much they enjoyed and learned from the mock interviews! Everyone gained a lot of knowledge from the alumni interviewers.” Graham Sudduth stated, “I learned how to provide validating stories to back up my resume bullets and speak with a confident voice.” Jordan Floerlee commented, “Mike taught me that I also need to interview the company I am applying for during the interview process.” Joe Mirbaha commented, “Dennis emphasized the importance of self-discipline which will set me apart from others.” These were just a few of the comments from our undergraduate brothers.
We would not be able to provide this mentorship event without the support of our Alumni and Volunteers. We would like to thank the following Alumni for giving of their time and talents on Saturday, February 29, 2020 and for providing part of that “90% of the outside classroom experience” to our undergrads:
Bill Bowler, MO Eta
Otto Etzel, MO Eta
Ken Krickhahn, MO Alpha
Tom Marty, MO Eta
John Sheldon, MO Eta
Dennis Heim, MO Eta
Mike Woody, MO Eta
Please contact John Hopson, Balanced Man Steward, 912-572-9066 if you would like to provide your mentorship and talents to our undergrads for next year’s mock interviews.
